House Rules

Art of War 102

House Rules are those which can be voluntarily created before the start of a scenario if agreed upon by all the participants.

Members vary greatly as to their willingness to play with, or without, House Rules. My experience is that most Members are happy to consider any reasonable House Rule suggested. But all Members have the right to decline playing with any House Rules they do not agree with.

There are instances where some Members may not agree on House Rules and will decline to play each other. While unfortunate, this can happen. Ideally you should try to compromise if possible. If it is not, politely decline the game and search out a different person to battle against.

The most "classic" example of a House Rules are those designed for the Night turns. Players will often propose a House Rule asking that no forward movement be made during night. While this used to be a necessity, the Optional Rule "Night Movement Fatigue" increases the fatigue of every unit which moves during a night by 50 points. Your best move at night is to move very sparingly or not at all.

Other House Rules might include "No Melee in Column" or other movement restrictions. Another possibility are artillery stacking limits.

Be sure you fully understand the House Rules proposed and why they are being proposed before you accept them. If you are not completely sure whether to accept a House Rules or not, you should email your commander or a friend in the Club for advice on the matter. Doing so will possibly prevent misunderstandings and frustrations later in the game.
